Understanding Digital & Print Typography Units
Typography units bridge traditional print (points, picas, inches) and modern digital screen layouts (pixels, rem, em).
Convert digital typography and CSS units including pixels (px), REM, EM, points (pt), picas, inches, and centimeters.
0.625 Root EM
Typography units bridge traditional print (points, picas, inches) and modern digital screen layouts (pixels, rem, em).
The W3C defines 1 CSS inch as exactly 96 CSS pixels, and 1 CSS point as 1/72 of a CSS inch (4/3 px). This ensures consistent sizing across high-density retina displays.
Modern CSS frameworks like Tailwind CSS map spacing and typography utilities to REM values (e.g. text-sm = 0.875rem = 14px; p-4 = 1rem = 16px).
For body copy and headings, using REM ensures layout scales smoothly when visually impaired users zoom their browser font settings.
Divide the pixel value by the root font-size (default 16px). For example, 24px / 16 = 1.5rem.
REM (Root EM) scales relative strictly to the root <html> font size, while EM scales relative to the immediate parent element's font size (which can compound).
In standard digital screens (96 DPI CSS reference standard), 1 point (1/72 inch) equals exactly 1.3333 CSS pixels (96 / 72 = 4/3 px).
REM units respect user accessibility settings (such as when users increase default browser text size for readability), whereas fixed pixel values can ignore user preferences.
